Manure can be composted in piles or in bins. Bins are best for keeping the manure in a neat heap. As with regular composting, a three-bin system can be useful here. One bin can be used for adding fresh manure, a second for the process to finish and a third for use. A larger size will get hotter, though.

The compost pile is mixed or managed to ensure that all of the feedstock heats to the minimum of 131°F (55°C) for a minimum of three days.
Composting is a method of speeding natural decomposition under controlled conditions. Raw organic materials are converted to compost by a succession of organisms (Figure 2). During the first stages of composting, bacteria increase rapidly. Later, actinomycetes (filamentous bacteria), fungi and protozoans go to work.
Monitoring the internal temperature with a probe-type thermometer can indicate when to turn the windrow (Figure 6). To efficiently compost manure, turn the windrow when the internal temperature drops below 120 degrees F. After five to six turns, the manure should be composted. Temperatures should be taken at various locations and depths.

Mix raw livestock manure with brown leaves, straw, spoiled hay or shredded paper in the first bin. If using manure mixed with bedding, it will probably have a good carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and you don't need to add anything else, Andrews said.
